A story is told that a man was once walking when Elijah appeared alongside him. They passed an animal's carcass which emitted a terrible odor. The man showed a discomfort, but Elijah made nothing of it. Then they both passed a very haughty and arrogant person, and Elijah placed his hand to his nostrils. He explained that the reaction caused by this proud man was worse than that caused by the dead animal. The latter, if touched, would cause a period of impurity of only one day, whereas the impure effect of an arrogant individual is extremely serious. This fault is abhorrent to both G-d and man.
